On a beautiful afternoon of sun and stiff breeze ideal for running rugby, both 'Muir and Heriots S1 squads were out to compete and play strong running rugby.
Electing to play into the wind in the first half, 'Muir started well, with Heriots having kicked long from the kick off and looked to attack from deep. However, with strong defensive displays from both teams, Heriots turned the ball over and were quick to capitalise, running the ball in on the wing for the first score, but the conversion went wide..
Muir responded well and began to distribute the ball better. They almost scored from quick phase ball only for Heriots to turn it over on the line - a theme of the game - but failed to clear their lines well and Alex Dixon slid over for 'Muir's first try, converted by Josh Beveridge. Heriots attacked again and went another score up to lead 7-4.
Muir then managed to mount some strong passing rugby and score twice (Lim Habib and Dallas Dumas) before the half, to lead 11-7.
Turning to have the wind at their backs Mur made the most of it and managed to mount a strong defensive effort that saw them force a series of mistakes from Heriots which they were able to convert into points, to cross the whitewash four more times (Alex Dixon x2, Fraser Thomson & Ross Campbell) and one further conversion from Ben Somerville.
Heriots mounted a strong late surge to claim a third try in the dying seconds of the game, with the conversion agonisingly rebounding off the post. The game ended 24-11.
Huge thanks to Heriots for making us feel so welcome, and for the positive spirit that the match was played in.
