Arnold Clark Legacy 7s Series set to get underway

Arnold Clark Car and Van Rental is delighted to confirm its sponsorship of the Legacy 7s Series, the rugby sevens competition developed to help the sport ahead of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The Legacy 7s Series is part of the ongoing legacy programme for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and brings together established events at Stirling County (20th April), Boroughmuir (26th April) in Edinburgh, Howe of Fife (4th May), Hamilton (11th May) and Glasgow City (18th May). Launched in 2011 the Legacy 7s Series is backed by Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Life, Scottish Rugby and rugby clubs across Scotland. It will bring together some of the top teams both nationally and internationally, assisting player development and increasing awareness of rugby sevens ahead of Glasgow 2014. Rugby sevens will be played at both the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Ten teams will play in each tournament including the five host teams (Stirling County, Boroughmuir, Howe of Fife, Hamilton and Cartha Queen’s Park). A number of guest teams will also be invited by each individual host tournament. The overall winner will be the side that accumulates the most points across all five events, with double points being awarded at the final event in the series, the Glasgow City Sevens.

Jeffrey Clark, General Manager, Arnold Clark Car and Van Rental manager spoke of his delight at the new sponsorship. He said: “Rugby sevens is not only a Commonwealth sport, but an Olympic sport as of 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. It has the potential to offer what the 15 a-side game can’t, the festival atmosphere! We are delighted to sponsor the Legacy 7’s Series and wish all the competing teams’ success for the forthcoming season.”

Chair of Glasgow Life and the Executive Member for the Commonwealth Games, Councillor Archie Graham, said: “The Legacy 7s Series is growing year on year and will continue to do so this year with the support of Arnold Clark Car and Van Rental. This series will play a crucial role in helping us build awareness of sevens ahead of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

“We want as many people as possible to come along and experience sevens at the various tournaments later this year. By helping bring sevens to a new audience we will deliver a real legacy from the Games and we now can’t wait for the action to get underway.

Glasgow Warriors and Scotland squad member, Sean Kennedy, who played in the 2011 Legacy Sevens Series, said: “Rugby sevens is fast and action-packed so it is a great introduction to the sport for those who maybe haven’t had the chance to see it before. Playing 7s definitely helped develop me as a player and I really enjoyed playing in the Legacy 7s Series. The crowds really responded to the players and I am sure this year will be the same. And who knows there may well be some stars of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games on show.”

Arnold Clark Car & Van Rental is Scotland’s largest rental company and is proud to sponsor the 2013 Legacy 7’s Series.
