Match report Kelso

By Morgane Jarles

Boroughmuir defeated Kelso 51-0 at Meggetland this Saturday, scoring 6 beautiful tries in a very entertaining game.

The game started with a Kelso ball, soon stolen by Muir in a lineout. The hosts displayed good teamwork in attack, but conceded a penalty 5 minutes into the game, missed by the Kelso full-back Corey Venus.

Kelso held on to the ball but was unable to go forward thanks to the good pressure of the Muir defence. However, the Borderers gained another penalty, again missed by Venus. Muir regained possession, and Jordan Edmunds had a fine line break after a clever switch with David Reekie.

This resulted into the first try of the afternoon, scored by Malcolm Clapperton, and converted by Reekie (7-0). Boroughmuir held on to the ball and displayed strong go-forward play especially with Robert Cairns and Neil Rodger making ground. Muir won a penalty on the 22 meters line, successfully kicked by Reekie (10-0). Then, Kelso had possession of the ball, and the outstanding Muir defence was rewarded by another penalty allowing Reekie to add 3 more points to the scoreboard (13-0).

Muir then displayed good organisation in attack, notably with a good line break by Alex Cox, well-served by Marshall, and gained another penalty, successfully kicked between the sticks by Reekie (16-0). The locals played in Kelso’s half for the rest of the first half (HT 16-0).

Muir gained the ball soon after the restart, and kept attacking the visitors’ defensive line, as illustrated by line breaks by Craig Marshall and good support by the forwards.

Soon after a Kelso forward got yellow carded, scrum-half Sam Johnson did an excellent pick up and scored Muir’s second try. Reekie added the extra points (23-0). Joni Hare scored another converted try only 3 minutes later (30-0). This was followed by another try, with Sam Johnson who ran up half of the pitch after a scrum, and offloaded to Clapperton who touched down.

Reekie added the extras (37-0). Following these 3 tries, Kelso briefly regained possession of the ball, but couldn’t get past the tight Muir defence. The Meggetland men, who physically dominated until the end of the game, concluded with 2 tries by Alex Cox.

The first one resulted from great execution by the back line, with a line break by Marshall, who offloaded to Robert Cairns, who passed to Cox on the left corner. Reekie converted it (44-0). Alex Cox added the last try on the final whistle, and Reekie added the extras (51-0).

Boroughmuir had a good game displaying great teamwork, and remains at the top of the league table.

“Rucks were a bit messy in the first half, but when the forwards got organised we managed good go-forward balls, which allowed us to play out wide”, Sam Johnson commented after the game.
