Boroughmuir defeated Biggar 50-3 at a dreich Meggetland this Saturday, thanks to tries by Robert Cairns, Joni Hare, Alex Cox, Jordan Edmunds and a hat-trick by Greig Scott. Muir dominated most games areas, especially the scrums, and the visitors were never given the chance to go through the excellent home defence.

Boroughmuir started the game playing in Biggar’s half. The home scrum showed early superiority, with a clever pick up by Andy Rose, who offloaded to Sam Johnson, who passed to Stevie Wilson cutting in at full pace. Because it was quite wet, Muir knocked the ball on but soon regained it in a lineout, and beautifully passed it through the hands of the backs, and gained a penalty in front of the posts, successfully kicked by David Reekie (3-0). Biggar regained possession, allowing Stuart Harrison to run a fine line break, but the Meggetland men put a lot of pressure in defence, forcing the visitors to kick the ball away.

The latter held on to the ball, and were close to scoring after a line break by Kayle Connor, but Muir held on in defence and won the ball in a scrum, allowing David Reekie to kick for clearance. Even though Biggar regained possession in the lineout, the game was now played in Muir’s half.

The hosts benefited from a turnover, and displayed goof moves at the back, resulting into a try by Robert Cairns after a line break by Stevie Wilson. David Reekie added the extra points (10-0). Muir scored again 2 minutes later, after a very strong maul going more than 10 meters forward. Joni Hare touched down but Reekie missed the conversion (15-0). This was followed by attempts from Biggar in attack, but Muir’s defence was impeccable.

Indeed, Biggar wasn’t able to go forward. However, Sullivan was able to kick the ball into touch very close to the try line. Boroughmuir reacted really well, regaining possession at a scrum. Craig Marshall made considerable ground, and Muir gained a penalty, kicked into touch. The Meggetland men kept attacking the line, and Greig Scott concluded the 1st half with a try, converted by Reekie (HT 22-0).

Biggar put pace on the ball after the restart, and after making good ground on the right, gained a penalty, successfully kicked by Carlyon (22-3). Muir soon regained possession at a ruck, and the backs again were running fine passages of play, with the ball going through the hands of Alex Cox, then Craig Marshall, then Stevie Wilson, who offloaded back to Marshall, and finally Alex Cox touched down! Reekie converted the try (29-3).

This was soon followed by a forwards’ try. They won a scrum close to the try line and Greig Scott scored his second try. Reekie added the extra points (36-3). Muir held on to possession, and kept going in attack with breaks by Andy Rose and Robbie Wilson, and good support as well from the forwards. However, Biggar benefited from a turnover, and contested the game a bit more. The Meggetland men briefly regained possession at a scrum, with a strong pick up by Joni Hare, but there was a bit of confusion in attack, allowing Biggar to recover the ball. Muir soon regained possession, and Stevie Wilson made considerable ground after a clever chip kick. He offloaded to Alex Cox, who unfortunately was tackled just centimetres away from the try line. Boroughmuir held on to the ball, and Greig Scott scored his 3rd try, converted by Reekie (43-3). Jordan Edmunds scored the last try of the afternoon almost immediately after that, and Reekie added the extras (50-3). With only 2 minutes remaining, Biggar attacked the line but wasn’t able to go through the tight home defence.

The score reflects the good work put in by the Meggetland men. Boroughmuir consolidates its position at the top of the league table thanks to this comfortable victory.

Man of the match Greig Scott commented:
“My tries came from the good work from everyone else on the team, and the excellent work of the forwards in the scrum. I just put the icing on the cake”.
