Bonus point victory over Peebles to boost Muir’s confidence

Boroughmuir defeated Peebles 27-10 at Meggetland this Saturday. It was a very entertaining game with 5 tries scored by Robert Cairns, Johnny Adams, Joni Hare, Ian Moody and Jordan Webster.

The game started with action on the visitors’ left wing with Connor Blyth being caught by the Muir defence. The Meggetland men then displayed good intentions in attack. Greig Scott, Alex Cox and Robert Cairns all took the ball up and the lineouts were well organised. However, Peebles’ effective defence recovered the ball.

Jonothan Swiatek burst through, and then Allan Smellie made good ground on the right. The Borderers gained a penalty after a good line break by Kieran Brown, successfully kicked by Greg Raeburn (0-3).

Boroughmuir reacted straight away with a clever move at the back. Jordan Webster cut the line and the ball quickly went through the hands to the left, and Craig Marshall took the ball in. The forwards then worked hard with a good take by Nick Fraser in a lineout and then good hits notably by Greig Scott allowed Muir to stay close to the try line.

Then the backs were in for another good move that resulted into a try by Robert Cairns for his 100th game under the Boroughmuir shirt.

Jordan Webster came in, switched with Craig Marshall who offloaded to Robert Cairns who raced away and touched down. The conversion was missed (5-3). Muir kept testing the line but Peebles held on in defence and briefly regained possession.

Warren Kearney sprinted through and offloaded to Swiatek. The Borderers opened on the left and Kearney once again hit the line, but Andy Rose benefitted from a turnover and broke through. Very fast hands on the left featuring Craig Marshall, Robert Cairns and Ian Moody resulted in an overlap that Johnny Adams took advantage of to score a try 2 minutes before the break.

David Reekie added the extra points (HT 12-3).

Boroughmuir's Rob Cairns in his 100th Game

Boroughmuir kept dictating the pace after the restart, scoring 2 unconverted tries in a row. The first one came from Joni Hare after a good break by Robert Cairns on the left (17-3). The next one was scored by Ian Moody after an excellent maul (22-3). Peebles’ stand-off Donald Anderson then ran a fine line break.

Alex Cox was yellow carded following this action. Peebles kept attacking with Callum Scott and Jon Swiatek who both made ground, but Muir benefitted from a turnover. Both Magnus Bradbury and Greig Scott had good runs and Jordan Webster scored an unconverted try after the Meggetland men chose to open the game on the right (27-3).

Peebles regained possession and Connor Blyth broke through. It was then Warren Kearney’s turn to run a fine line break. Peebles built it up towards the try line with good inputs from the forwards. Donald Anderson eventually found a gap in the defence and touched down.

Greg Raeburn converted the try (27-10). The visitors kept attacking the home defence with god hits by Callum Scott and Dale Clancy, and unfortunately Trent Sutton was sent off. Cal Davies, who had been replaced by Darren Miller earlier in the game, had to fill in at flanker. Peebles held on to possession but Boroughmuir had the last words kicking the ball out after a turnover (full time, 27-10).

This victory allows Muir to remain at the top of the league table with a precious 8-point gap ahead of Watsonians.

Captain and man of the match Andy Rose commented after the game:

“I think the boys are starting to believe again after a rough patch in the last 2 weeks. We trained hard this week. We had a good first half and we defended a lot in the second half, being one-man down".
