Boroughmuir 2nd XV 23 vs Heriots 2nd XV 34

By Carrie Pincott

What have I done , what have I done, what have I done to deserve this …….as the Pet Shop Boys would have said?

A good day in ‘Suburbia’ down at Goldenacre in terms of the weather and the playing surface, started off well for the Magic 2s with a forage or two into the ‘Nails’ 22. It’s a sin we never scored a try and settled for Armstrong popping over 3 points from a second Heriots infringement under pressure.

For the rest of the half and for the rest of the game our scrum dominated and got turnover on a good few occasions. It was from ball against the head that Frank the Tank attacked from a Neil Rodger pass, fed the lively Whitelaw on a great tight angled run, who broke two tackles and made 20 metres to set up another foray into enemy territory.

Unfortunately Heriots proved that ripping ball from us was a little like taking candy from a kid and kicked back down wind for us to start again.

It wasn’t until 24 mins that Heriots showed great skills in the back line and with two waves of runners and numerous dummy runners they passed the ball out wide and scored a well worked move. 3-7 and the tide was turning. 4 min later and Walker was penalised for a dubious penalty but the sole arbitrator of the laws had made his call. 3 -10 and the direction of the game was in heriots hands.

Confidence was high in Heriots and the cheeky Symes at no. 8 showed a bit of class with a wee kick of the ball out the back of a scrum to his 10 who allowed the winger to attack wide. They set up 2nd, 3rd then 4th phase ball and with great hands again sped in to the corner for a very well deserved try.

3- 15 and after 32mins and Muir were well and truly on the back foot. There were glimpses of skill with Hamilton the ever lively scrum half mounting attacks with quick ball and good accurate passing. Summers stepping up to 10 showed a steady hand and allowed the outside backs good ball to take forward.
Our downfall were turnovers which Heriots took advantage of and played the territory well. They also showed running ability in the backs that will see them a force in this league. With Robinson yellow carded for a poor decision saw one more attack in the first half from the Heriots who made it to 7 metres out with a good scramble defence from Muir.

The Heriots forwards however picked and drove over ball in 3 phases. 3-22 at half time but all to play for with a wind behind Muir in the 2nd half.

Heriots started lively and with Muir still only having 14 men on the field broke through poor tackling into the Muir half then up to the 5m line. Power on and they drove ball over the line to put them 3-29 ahead. They looked sharp and had hit Muir at a vulnerable time. Muir however showed a bit of resilience and Greg Cannie back playing rugby for the first time this season saw him come on with 20m to go.

He gathered ball on the Heriots 10m line and broke through a gap for the 2nd try for Muir. Unfortunately his lungs had not caught up and he missed the conversion. Muir showing promise kept ball in hand and although not many yards were made they at least held onto it for longer periods. Cannie was moved to the10 position and he showed a big boot clearing ball from our 22m when necessary and looked like he was enjoying being back.

Then with Yawayawa receiving ball in space and beating one man was sandwiched by two more with 5 m to go only to knock on. A good break and confidence was back, or so it seemed. 29mins into the half and with the ball 5m out we saw the Muir pack pick and go twice with Neil Rodger diving over for a well-deserved try for him. The past few weeks he has shown how to lead by example and once again put in a good performance.

The game was not pretty by this point and very broken which suited Heriots more than Muir although the poor tackling in the midfield saw Max Learmonth, a previous club internationalist player, break through and feed his winger for a score putting the game out of reach. Jack Hamilton would not give up and once again saw a gap, dodged a couple of ‘Nails’ then sped through a gap for another unconverted try.

Taking the score to 18 - 34. The game was lost but Muir never stopped attacking and the last play of the day saw Paul ‘Bus’ Richards drive over to finish the game 23-34 and Muir winnig the 2nd half. The final conversion not taken as a Nail was ‘hammered’ on the head and lay in the way. Coaches decision to call it as the bonus point was already made.

All in all a poor performance and we need to improve if we want to compete. Good performances from Rodger and Hamilton with Jack edging the MOM from him. Summers stepped up and controlled well in his first outing ,Hutchision the old man of the team stuck in well in the boiler room and Whitelaw looked lively in the centre. Was not the best to watch but we will improve as guys like Cannie come back from injury.

With Ayr at home next week the coaches promise that they will not be ‘Left to Their Own Devices’ and the team promise a better performance. They tell us they will act like a toughened New York City Boy rather than bunch of West End Girls! Thank goodness it is a home game and we don’t have to Go West!

Next Week's Game: Ayr (H)
