Boroughmuir Rugby S2: 19 - 17: Portobello U15's

Boroughmuir S2's welcomed Portobello U15's to Meggetland and with the wind blowing strongly down the pitch, it was going to be a game of two halves.

Boroughmuir were playing with the wind in the first half and started the game strongly. Muir were competing well at the breakdown were able to put together some good phases of rugby. Both teams were very determined and the tackles were going in strong from both sides.

Muir eventually opened the scoring after a period of pressure and then a strong run broke a few tackles to get in behind and score between the posts. (7 - 0)

The lead was increased shortly after, with another strong run from the Muir 2nd row to beat a couple of defenders before an offload to the centre to cross over near the 15m line. (12 - 0)

And just before the break, a third try came after some great work by the forwards to get the ball out to the wing to run round the defence and score under the posts.(19 - 0)

A good first half performance from Boroughmuir, playing the conditions very well and the S2's went in at half-time leading Portobello by 3 tries to nil.

(Half-Time: 19 - 0)

The second half was going to be more difficult for Muir playing in to the wind and our pack started to struggle in spells against the bigger Portobello forwards. The Muir defence was determined and were putting in the tackles to keep out Portobello.

A free kick against Muir on their own scrum in their 22m, Muir were slow to react back and the Portobello scrum half was quick to take the tap and pass out to their winger who scored in the corner. (19 - 5)

Portobello capitalised after some Muir mistakes. Handling errors in the wind and a few knock-ons when trying to run out of defence. Portobello scored their second try with about 10 minutes to go before they squeezed over for their third with just under 5 left on the clock.

Muir held out for the last few minutes before the referee brought an end to a very competitive game.

(Full time: 19 - 17)

A good team performance from the Muir S2's against an older Portobello team gave them a well earned win. Thanks to Portobello for a great game and to all the support & volunteers who braved the conditions and the strong wind.

P7 Match Report from Dunfermiline RFC

This week’s fixture offered Muir P7s a trip over the water to face Dunfermline, Perthshire and Lasswade

Muir 4 Lasswade 5

After a bracing warm up, Muir took the start against Lasswade. Strong ball presentation meant the Muir managed to hold on to the ball and eventually get the ball out wide for their first score. Muir continued with confidence moving the ball down the line well. Lasswade opened the scoring in the 2nd half but Muir retaliated by return going over the line with a couple of exciting tries much to the travelling supports cheers. A game decided by the narrowest of margins…

Muir 1 Perth 3

Not sure if the passing shower dampened spirits however Muir seemed to struggle in the 2nd game against Perth. Muir scored first however Perth came straight back with a try against a very stand offish defence. Muir kept battling but a kick from deep allowed Perth to take advantage and run in a good score. The 2nd half was very close with all the Muir players putting in a huge effort

Dunfermline 4 Muir 4

After a bit of a pep talk Muir started the final game playing more like a team. The showers continued much to the annoyance of those on the sidelines, but the players were in full flight. The game was end to end with Muir putting in some big tackles and were holding their shape better. A heavy pitch meant that the ball was sticking where it landed and so a couple of penalties resulted from handling errors. The sun came out in the 2nd half but still couldn’t tell who was which player as they all had so much mud on them. Muir continued to work hard and scored in the last few minutes however an unlucky loose pass gave Dunfermline the chance to equalise with the last play of the day – exciting stuff!

All in all a good day with P7 definitely improving in a number of areas.

Thanks to Dunfermline for hosting a very enjoyable fixture and thanks as always for the Muir crowd for their on-going support
